Step One: Get To Know Me
The Story of How Four Little Ewes Became 300.
I want to make this planet a fabulous place for sheep and their humans. We co-exist on the big blue orb called Earth with creatures of all makes and models but none fascinate me quite as much as the ovine species. (Equines tie for first but that is another story for another time.) My heart’s desire is to create a place where sheep are safe, healthy and happy because their humans are informed, kind and motivated. So for me, this About Cheryl section is more About Sheep.
Hi. I’m Cheryl Williams-Cosner. And all I have ever wanted to do is raise healthy, beautiful livestock. It began the moment the two year old me sat on a pony at the fair. Fast forward to now, education, experience and lifelong learning has brought me to a point where I am ready to share my 40 years of know-how. My goal is to help you manage and market the healthiest, most beautiful sheep that you can possibly raise.
It started with four. Four little ewes. I wanted to play with fiber. I had no idea of the journey those four little sheep would take me on. Within a year, I had 18 more sheep, then 80 head. One night over Chinese food in our favorite restaurant, my husband and I did a business plan on a napkin. We wanted 300 ewes to go with our 125 mother cows.
This story actually began with a nerdy, book and animal loving tomboy, who lived outdoors and could not wait for summer to ride horses and go fishing.
“Completely undomesticated,” my mother said. “Loved horses more than boys,” my grandmother said.
With money for my eighth birthday, I bought a Holstein heifer named Betsy. Betsy was mine to raise and care for and that I did. Then came my first goat, Miwa. By age 12, my sister and I had our own goat dairy consisting of registered Nubians. We sold milk to local families, raised more dairy calves, notably my Brown Swiss heifer Bea, and the occasional pig.
Along Came The Sheep. It began with my sister’s foundation ewe and her lamb. Then came more sheep and soon we had a flock of 20. By the time I was ready for college, I had built a motley little flock that paid for my first year as an Animal Science major (what else?) at Washington State University. Four years later, I graduated with my Agriculture Science degree with minors in Animal Science and Agriculture Economics.
And I married the boy of my dreams. Another nerdy, animal loving ranch kid. Together we had one vision. That was to create a farming and ranching life together.
Thirty-eight years later.
We moved our entire ranch and expanded into a neighboring state. Check out that story here.
I built a flourishing wholesale business selling lamb, beef, goat and chicken to the best chefs and on the best menus in the country.
Between two kids, I finished my MBA in Marketing and have since racked up thirty years of training and practice in Holistic Management and Regenerative Grazing. Get those details here.
Best of all, I lay claim to three fantastic adult kids.
